What we need for data recovery

Bring or have ready:

• The computer or the bare drive
• What you want most (photos vs QuickBooks vs everything)
• When it failed, in rough terms
• Whether anyone already ran a "repair" tool on it (say so)

Don't keep powering on a clicking drive "to see if it still works." That's how recoveries get worse.
