A slow Windows PC in Berwick: the checklist we actually run
Not "run a cleaner." The honest order: disk, malware, RAM, what's installed, then reinstall if it's cheaper.
Everyone has a cousin who says "defrag it." Here's the order that actually decides the job.
- Is the drive dying or just full? An old spinning disk that's 95% full will feel haunted. An SSD that's failing feels haunted and dangerous for files.
- Is it malware? Browser hijacks and "your PC is infected" overlays are still common.
- Is it RAM? 4 GB in 2026 is a reason to be slow. Upgrading is often the cheapest honest repair.
- Is Windows itself a dumpster? Too many "optimizers," five antivirus remnants, a profile that's been migrated since 2012.
- Is a clean install cheaper than archaeology? We say so. You choose.
